Summer in Youghal

Drenched in sunshine and with thousands of visitors to the town and  its beaches, Youghal has been a hive of activity since the good weather arrived. Flip flops and sunglasses are conspicuous in quantities rarely seen before in this country and the multitude of accents from all parts of Ireland and overseas have added a multilingual cacophony to the normal hustle and bustle about the town.

Of course, Youghal is looking splendid in the good weather. Its natural beauty with its steep hills overlooking a blue bay, its miles of beaches or its old world charms such as the town walls, Clock Gate and its picturesque Main Street lend the town a physical splendour that others often envy.

But huge amounts of hard work and effort have also been invested in the town. The Tidy Towns committee and the Town Council for example have ensured stunning floral displays throughout the length of the town, embellishing it with beds, baskets and flower pots that are now blooming over with colour. The Chamber of Commerce recently hosted the Queen of the Sea festival which saw fireworks light the skyline during the night time closing ceremony whilst on Sunday August 18th, the Medieval Festival will be held in the Medieval Gardens with battle re-enactments and a food fair. Meanwhile, the enthusiastic Youghal4All group continue their never ending efforts with additional clean-ups, meet & greet volunteers for tourists and a now year long festival line-up with the Mackerel Festival beginning on Friday 30th August and the forthcoming Halloween festival in October.

On the small chance that visitors might have time to spare from the sun drenched beaches and free festivals, there are a dozen other activities and amenities which can also be enjoyed – swimming pools, pitch n putt course, golf club, tennis court, soccer, GAA, rugby, amusement centre, handball court, snooker club, nature walks, fishing and boat rides which actually totals 14 additional activities or 1 a day for a fortnight’s holiday break. With another month of decent summer temperatures and sunshine predicted yet, Youghal looks set to remain a hotbed of summer fun for visitors, tourists and locals alike.
